Title

Poster for "The Californians" by Jamie Budge, 1968, 2/2

Description

A fluorescent-green poster for Jamie Budge's surf film "The Californians" (1967) advertises four screenings in the San Fernando Valley:

October 10, 1968 - Canoga Park Woman’s Club
October 11, 1968 - Reseda Woman’s Club
October 12, 1968 - Chatsworth Center Building
October 13, 1968 - Valley Teen Center

The poster says,

"This is probably the first place you have heard about this movie, unless a friend told you about it. There is a reason for this. When you budget for a film, you plan to spend about one-half on the movie and one-half on the advertising. Jamie Budge didn't do this. He spent every penny of the ten thousand dollars on the movie. So you won't see any big ads in the Surfing magazines. The first two minutes of The Californians cost as much as one of those. You won't hear any long campaigns on the radio. That money was used filming all the excellent rides of David Nuuihwa, Nat Young, Corky Carroll, Midget Farrelly, John Peck, Micky Dora [Miki Dora]; instead of just enough to get by. Jamie spent too much time with them at their spots waiting for the surf that would support the most outstanding display of ability ever filmed. Jamie didn't have enough time left over to make even one surf mural, magazine cover, or nice write-up about himself. Not even a pretty picture on the poster. They are all in the movie; in artistic sequences done so well you wouldn't expect them in any surf film. The Californians is done and the results are now obvious. Maybe Jamie should have had a pretty poster, an ad in Surfer, and a nice magazine article about himself. He didn't even need to bother creating possibly the best surf film of all time. But he did!"

Start time was 8:30 p.m. Admission was $2.00. The film would later be expanded and rereleased in 2010.
